Four years have gone by since "Local Experience with Micro-Hydro
Technology" was first printed. Now, before deciding on a third printing, the
question of re-editing the manuscript arose. While we know from readers
reactions that the book was useful for many and continues to be so at the
moment, an important question was, whether new developments in the field of
Micro Hydro-power would not warrant a complete re-edition. We think indeed it
would, because activities described have continued successfully and have gained
momentum far beyond the examples originally cited. However, the result of
documenting these recent developments would be a new book on more advanced
technology as compared to the technology originally described. The present book
was -and should continue to be, in our opinion -addressed to those who are in
the process of beginning to look into possibilities of local hydropower
development. To them, a non-revised edition will be as useful as it was at the
outset since the subject is treated in broader perspective ranter than in
technical details. The latter, we feel, should be the subject of entirely new
publications. In order to ensure a broader distribution of the book ATOL and
SKAT agreed to co-publish this non-revised version.
