These machines, which are similar to extruders, are used for extracting oil from oilseeds or nuts. They consist of a horizontal cylinder which contains a rotating screw. The seeds or nuts are carried along by the screw and the pressure is gradually increased. The material is heated by friction and/or electric heaters. The oil escapes from the cylinder through small holes or slots and the press cake emerges from the end of the cylinder. Both the pressure and temperature can be adjusted for different kinds of raw material.
TINY OIL MILL
This is a variable pitch screw expeller, capable of up to 73% extraction rates on a single pass of material. Up to 100kg per hour of groundnut and 80kg per hour of sunflower seed can be processed. The expeller is fitted with a steam kettle for preheating the seed. Optional extras include a boiler for the steam kettle which uses the husk as a fuel, filter press, filter pump and ground nut decorticator. The complete plant is driven via a belt and pulleys from a line shaft powered by a 7.5kW three phase electric motor or a 10kW diesel engine.

Two basic methods are used for filling powders, granules and high viscosity products. They are volumetric filling and filling after weighing. The nature of the product usually determines which method is used. Volumetric filling includes filling by auger flask fillers and vacuum filling. Filling by weight is perhaps the most satisfactory way of meeting the requirements of Weights and Measures Acts or similar legislation, as the product is weighed before being filled.

A large plastic or stainless steel sieve is hand held against the rotating shaft of a power drill or small electric motor. The shaft end is fitted with an eccentric cam which imparts a rapid vibration to the sieve.

Homogenizers are used in the food industry to form a stable emulsion from two immiscible liquids, usually oil and water. Homogenization causes the breakdown and dispersal of fat globules to form an homogeneous liquid. This pasteurizes acid fruit juices. The unit is not manufactured but the university is willing to advise on the setting up of such a pasteurizer. The complete unit comprises: juice tank, pasteurizer with fire box, reservoir, chimney and outlet. Other equipment needed includes: juice extractor, thermometer, bottle capper, bottles and caps. The pasteurizer is topped up by continuously checking and pouring water into the reservoir. When it reaches the correct temperature, juice flows from the tank to the pasteurizer, is heated and then pumped through the outlet valve to the filling area.

This prototype equipment has been tested successfully for pasteurizing fruit juice. It consists of a juice tank which feeds juice via a plastic pipe to a stainless steel coil. The coil is immersed in hot oil inside an insulated heater tank. The flow rate of juice is controlled by a valve to achieve the correct pasteurization conditions. It operates continuously at 30-120 litres per hour. Coil size: 15cm diameter made from 2.54cm diameter 18-gauge tube in five sections (bolted together and easily dismantled for cleaning).
