CONCLUSIONS OF THE SECTION
‘IPM IN STORED PRODUCTS’

During the general discussion that followed the presentation of different themes under the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of stored products section with particular reference to the Larger Grain Borer (LGB), participants arrived at the following conclusions:

*

Teretriosoma nigrescens is an appropriate method of biological control of LGB, and as such, a key element of IPM because it matches well with other control methods. In release areas, the predator has contributed to a substantial reduction of LGB populations and decreasing levels of grain-loss levels in farmers’ maize stores.

*

The use of microbial control (e.g. with fungi) requires a lot of time and resources, and the low research capacity and possible contamination of food were regarded as problematic.

*

More data on T. nigrescens impact are needed to convince farmers and decision makers (politicians). Participants agreed to continue follow-up studies.

*

Implementation and research activities require more co-operation between national programmes on the one hand, and NARES and international institutions (donors) on the other hand.

*

It was generally agreed, that the continuous monitoring of maize growing areas and the prompt release of T. nigrescens are a key method in tackling the LGB problem.
