The meeting on Integrated control of rural maize store pests, with particular reference to the Larger Grain Borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), and the future development of the post-harvest sector in sub-Saharan Africa was convened by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ). The meeting was held at the IITA-Benin station in Abomey-Calavi, from the 13th to the 15th of October 1997. The organisers are grateful to the Government of the Republic of Benin for facilitating the participation of international delegates.

Financial support for the meeting was provided by the German Ministry for Economic Co-operation (BMZ) and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA). The Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) and the International Institute of Biological Control (IIBC) also sponsored the participation of their own delegates and their counterparts from several African countries.

IITA and GTZ wish to express their sincere gratitude to these institutions for their financial support, and to the technical experts who worked with them to ensure the success of the meeting. The organisers would also like to thank the technical support staff of IITA for their tremendous help in organising the meeting, as well as Ms. Kim Vieyra and Ms. Caroll Moudachirou for their simultaneous interpretation of the oral presentations. Our additional thanks go to Ms. Caroll Moudachirou for the meticulous translation of the contributions into French and English.
