National Production

The cultivated area, average yield per feddan, production of cereal grains and main pulses during the period from 1984 to 1993 are given in Tables 2 - 4. Data reveal that the cultivated area of wheat and rice obviously increased by 81% and 30%, respectively (Table 2).

Average yield per feddan (1 feddan = 0.42 hectare) considerably increased by 46%, 38%, 42%, 47%, and 58% for wheat, maize, rice, millet, and beans, respectively. On the other hand it decreased by 9% for barley (Table 3).

The production of 1993 amounts about 4.8, 4.9, and 4.2 million tons for wheat, corn, and rice, respectively. For millet and barley it is 761.000 and 134.000 tons, respectively.

The percent of change is 164%, 34%, 86%, 36%, 55%, and 40% for wheat, corn, rice, millet, beans, and lentils, respectively. On the other hand barley production decreased by 8%, in comparison to the production of 1984 (Table 4).

The produced grain has generally a good quality and its quality standard is similar to that of the world market.
