Sorghum Institute (SRI) of Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Science (LAAS), a national sorghum research center, was established in 1984. The SRI include 6 Laboratories on sorghum breeding, genetics and biotechnology, germplasm resources, chemical analysis, computer exploitation and extension. There are 54 staff members in the institute, among whom 30 are researchers including 5 professors, 11 associated professors, 8 masters and 2 doctors.

The SRI in charge of the national sorghum research plays a leading role in sorghum research, researcher training, information and experimental materials exchanging and international research cooperation. Also dedicates itself to the development of new varieties and hybrids of sorghum, biotechnology processing, collection, evaluation and utilization of sorghum germplasm resources.

The SRI had developed and extendede Liaoza No. 1, Liaoza No. 5, Liaoza No.10 and Liaosize No. 1. A total of extended area was about 2.4 million Ha., resulting in an increase in sorghum grain production as much as 1850 million KGs. The researchers of the SRI had successfully extracted Sorgum Red Pigment from sorghum glumes and they have been doing more research on sorghum pigments.

The SRI has carried out the project of UNDP and established extensive cooperating with the main units of sorghum research in the world. Eighteen scientific personnel were sent abroad to engage in advanced studies and cooperative research. The whole research ability of the SRI had greatly strengthened
